Hugh Fleming (Havers) plays the part of an RAF bomber pilot who is shot down and although he survives suffers horrific burns and scarring. His life, once so full of promise, is now in sharp decline as his girlfriend abandons him and his RAF colleagues start to die off in the raging conflict whilst he lies helpless in a hospital bed.

An eminent reconstructive surgeon Angus Meikle (James Fox), offers Fleming experimental plastic surgery offers to re-build his face. But can the psychological anguish that torments Fleming ever be truly healed?

Based on the novel by Christopher Matthew inspired by the real life experience of Richard Hillary.
